Serena's window had carelessly been left open, allowing the approaching snow storm to chill the room before it even arrived. The pink haired girl brought her knees to her chest and pulled the covers tightly around her to get warmer. Rini felt the sheets were smoothly caressing her skin . . . Cotton sheets weren't supposed to do that . . . The pink haired girl smiled as she sleepily opened her eyes and noticed Diamond's velvet purple cape covering her. He must have come into the room during the night. What a comfort it was to know that he was always watching over her . . . always taking care of her . . . protecting her just like Tuxedo Mask did for Sailor Moon . . . "Good morning, princess." Rini heard the boy's voice sweetly drifting in. The silvery haired Diamond came into Serena's room and smiled down at the little girl. "Aren't you cold, Ruby?" Rini nodded as she rubbed the sleep out of her eyes. Diamond shut the window and sat down on the foot of the bed. His violet eyes sparkled as a stray sunbeam spilled through the window, shinning through a gap in the storm clouds. "Thank you, Diamond." She said, fighting off a yawn. Suddenly, Rini sneezed. Diamond looked at the girl curiously as she sneezed a second, third, and even fourth time. "Ruby, are you alright?" He asked. "I'm fine." She replied. Diamond nodded. He bent down closer to kiss her on the forehead. As he cradled her head in his hands, Diamond felt Rini's skin burning with fever. "Oh! You're so hot! I better get your aunt!" He said, concern knotting his brow. (FYI: The Tsukino family thinks that Diamond is Darien's long lost orphaned nephew) "What do you need my mom for?" Asked Serena as she walked into her room. The twelve year old boy looked at the blond with concern clouding his violet eyes. "Is something wrong?" She added as she caught sight of Diamond's gaze. "Ruby's burning up. I think she's sick." He replied. Serena walked over to the bed and felt the little girl's forehead. "What? No way!" She exclaimed in disbelief. "I'll go get mom." Serena announced. She ran out of the room, yelling all the way, "Mom! Mom! Come quick! Rini's got a fever! Mom?" Diamond looked down at Rini and smiled, brushing some errand wisps of her bangs away from her eyes. "Everything is going to be fine. Don't you worry about it." He stroked her cheek and continued to whisper soothing comforts to her. "Rini? Rini?" Mrs. Tsukino said as she came into the room. She took out a glass thermometer from of her apron and put it gently in the young girls mouth, frowning in maternal concern. Serena watched her mother and fondly remembered the times when she had done the same for her. Diamond looked up from where he sat beside Rini, expectantly waiting her verdict. Serena smiled to herself. Ever since Diamond had been sent to keep Rini company by Neo-Queen Serenity, he had become a good friend of the Sailor Scouts. She had discovered that, unlike the revengeful man she had faced off against, this boy was loving and caring. Diamond was worthy of being a fair and just ruler someday. Seeing him take care of Rini, unselfishly and lovingly, reminded Serena of her own prince, Darien. Both had given up their lives for the women they loved most. They stood by and protected their princesses, they were loyal, loving, trustworthy, powerful, and courageous men. Above all, Rini and Serena loved them both dearly. Rini loved Darien as her future daddy and Serena loved Diamond as her future son-in-law. She had no doubts about that one! Mrs. Tsukino examined the glass tube so hard that her eyes crossed. The occupants of the room held their collective breath. The blue haired woman shook her head. "Oh dear." She said aloud. "I'm afraid you've got a high temperature, Rini." "So what do we do?" Diamond asked. "I'm going to schedule an appointment for Rini to see the doctor." Mrs. Tsukino said as she left and made her way towards the phone. "You should get dressed." Serena told the little girl. Rini sat up and swung her legs over the side of the bed. She began to stand up, but as she did, they saw Rini's face grow pale. The pink haired girl swayed back and forth. Diamond caught her as she became dizzy and lost her balance. "Why don't I go find Ruby something to wear while you get her dressed." Diamond suggested, a sudden burst of authority drenching his voice. "She won't be able to do it herself." Serena watched the boy rummage through the closet and smiled to herself. He was so concerned and so adult-like. It was cute seeing the twelve year old taking charge. Diamond returned to the bed with a pink dress and a heavy coat. "Perfect, if she gets hot, she can take the coat off." Serena said. "Good thinking." She congratulated. Diamond smiled in return and went outside to give the girls privacy while Rini changed. After they were done, Serena called Diamond back. While waiting for Mrs. Tsukino to return, Diamond sat behind Rini and brushed her hair. While he did this, he whispered soothingly in her ear. The silver haired boy fashioned her hair in one long braid down her back. After he was done, he held the sick little girl in his arms and rocked slowly back and forth. "Rini, I made an appointment for you. If we leave right now, we should be able to make it." Mrs. Tsukino said as she came back into the room. "She's really dizzy. She can't even stand up." Serena warned. Mrs. Tsukino took the little girl in her arms. Rini opened her eyes when she realized she was being stolen from Diamond's comforting embrace. The boy found no words to protest with. He watched with worry and concern as his little love was being carried out. He would have to wait. "Mom, do you think Diamond could go with you?" Serena asked, following her mother. "I mean, Rini and him are so close and . . . he's really worried." Mrs. Tsukino stopped. "Well . . . sure, I don't see why not. As long as Darien wouldn't mind." She replied. Serena shook her head. "I'm sure it'd be fine with him." She answered. Diamond looked up at Mrs. Tsukino and then at Serena, happy relief bringing a smile to his lips. He waved at the blond, his violet eyes conveying his thanks to her as he followed Mrs. Tsukino and Rini out the door. Serena watched the three get in the car and drive off, smiling to herself yet her mind clouded with worry for her future daughter. *** Serena answered the knock at the door with nervous anticipation. Expecting it to be her mother back from the doctor's, she was disappointed to see it wasn't. "Oh." She said. Darien arched his eyebrows. "Oh? What's that supposed to mean?" He asked, pretending to be offended. "Oh? I'm only worth an oh? Fine, I'll just leave then." Darien added, a playful pout on his lips. "Knock it off, Darien." Serena laughed as she playfully slapped his arm. "I thought you were my mom." "Your mom? What's going on with your mom?" Darien asked, as he walked inside Serena's house and waved hello to Sammy. He suddenly did a double take as he noticed that Serena's little brother was playing by himself. "Hey, where's Diamond? I thought he was here with you." Worry suddenly set in. "He did spend the night here with you, didn't he Sammy?" "Don't worry." The brown haired boy replied as he pressed a button on his video game controller. "Diamond went with my mom to the doctor's. Rini woke up this morning with a fever." Darien's worry increased. "Rini? Is she okay?" He asked. "Why didn't you call me?" Serena lead her boyfriend over to the couch. "I didn't want you to worry. I was going to call you when they got back. That way I'd be able to tell you something instead of making you wait and wonder." "I hope she's okay." Darien said. "It was so weird. Rini was sneezing with a fever and when she stood up, she got so dizzy that she fell." Serena said. She sighed. "A couple days ago, I felt like I was coming down with something, but it went away. Maybe she caught the same thing." Darien nodded. "Winter's pretty bad this year. I wouldn't be surprised if she did. I hate to admit it, but I don't feel all that well myself." He said. The pair sat in Serena's living room, trying to rationalize Rini's illness until Mrs. Tsukino arrived home with Rini and Diamond. "Uncle!" Said Diamond as he saw Darien sitting on the couch. The boy came over to where they sat while Mrs. Tsukino carried the pink haired girl upstairs. "How is she? What's the matter with her?" Darien asked. Diamond shook his head. "The doctor thinks she has a cold. He prescribed some medicine for her to get rid of her dizziness and gave her a flu shot, just so she doesn't catch it. I don't know." Serena saw Diamond was toying with another idea. "What do you think?" She asked. "In Crystal Tokyo," Diamond began in a whisper so that Sammy wouldn't hear, "King Darien became very ill once. All of the doctors thought he had this or that . . . they couldn't agree and diagnose him properly. Finally, the Sailor Soldiers discovered that he was ill because earth was on the verge of destruction." He explained. Darien frowned. "But Rini doesn't have a planet. She's from the earth and the moon. And neither one of us is sick." He said. "I know . . . that's what's so confusing about it all." Diamond replied. He became silent as he watched Mrs. Tsukino descend the stairs. The boy sighed. "I don't know." "Hello Darien, it's nice to see you again." Mrs. Tsukino said as she caught sight of him. "I must say, your nephew is the most charming, well behaved, and helpful boy I've ever met." "Thank you very much Mrs. Tsukino." Said both Darien and Diamond at the same time with a little bow. "Is Rini resting now? Can we go see her?" They chorused. Serena laughed when both the young man and the boy said the same thing at the exact same moment. Mrs. Tsukino was laughing as well. "Yes she's resting now. I don't think a little visit would hurt." She took a medicine bottle out of her apron along with a metal spoon. "I was just about to go up and give Rini her medicine." "I'll do it." Darien offered. "How much does she need?" "A teaspoon." She replied, handing him the items. Darien took the bottle and frowned a little, not too thrilled about being the bearer of bad news for his little pumpkin. Diamond and Serena bounced up the stairs and tried to contain their enthusiasm as they knocked on the door. Rini greeted them all with a weak smile. "Hi guys." She said. "How are you feeling?" Serena asked, beating Diamond to it. The little girl groaned. "Awful. It seems like instead of feeling better and better, I just feel worse and worse." She smiled as Darien walked in but her face quickly turned to one of fearful disgust as she spied the dreaded medicine bottle in his hands. "No!" She wailed. "No! Please don't make me take that! Darien! No!" Darien shook his head. "I'm sorry." He replied as he carefully poured a teaspoon full of red liquid. "You have to take this if you want to feel better." Rini squeezed her eyes shut as Darien gently forced the spoon into his future daughter's mouth. She swallowed and then proceeded to gag while yelling, "I need a drink of water! Water! Please! It tastes yucky!" Darien, feeling totally guilty about the whole thing, rushed off to get a glass of water. It seemed like seconds later, the young man had returned. Rini gulped the water down. "Wow, faster than the speed of light or what." Serena commented with raised eyebrows. Rini had finished the glass but her complexion seemed to be even paler than before. "Yucky medicine and water on an empty stomach doesn't work." She commented before she laid back down on the pillow. Darien sighed. "I'm sorry, pumpkin." He said. The young man reached inside his green jacket and pulled out a thornless rosebud. He presented it to Rini. Her eyes lit up and she smiled. "I don't like medicine either. I wish you didn't have to take it." The little girl took the young flower from Darien and smelled it. "That's okay." She replied, not mad in the least that Darien had made her take such awful tasting medicine. The young man kissed Rini on the forehead. "I'll let you get some rest." He said, preparing to leave. "Do you have to go?" She whined. "The more rest you get, the sooner you'll get better." Darien explained. He turned to Diamond. "Are you going to stay here?" The boy looked up at him with pleading violet eyes. Darien looked at Serena. "Would it be alright if he stayed until Rini gets better?" He asked. "No problem." She answered. "I don't think anyone here would mind. Sammy loves hanging out with Diamond and Rini enjoys his company. After all, our future selves sent him here to be with her." Darien smiled and nodded. "True." He ran his hand through Diamond's silvery hair, messing it up playfully. "See you later, kiddo." He said. Ever since Diamond had moved in with him, he acted like he really was apart of his family. Darien took him under his wing, spent time with him, and called him things like "sport" and "kiddo." It was so convincing that sometimes Serena forgot that Diamond and Darien really weren't related. "Let me walk you to your car." Serena offered. Darien smiled as he took the blond girl's hand. They exited the room. Rini watched them leave and sighed not out of jealous envy but out of happiness. She had found a prince of her own. The little girl looked up at Diamond who was smiling down at her with twinkling violet eyes. "Oh, Diamond . . ." Rini said trailing off. She sat up and kissed the silver haired boy. Weakly, she laid her head back down on the pillow. "Tell me a story." Diamond nodded. "What would you like to hear?" He asked. The boy paused while he thought. "Have you heard 'The Hare in the Moon' by Ryokan?" Rini's eyebrows arched in curiosity. "No. What's a 'hare'?" The boy laughed. "A hare is a rabbit. Don't tell me you've never heard of that story when both you and your mother were named after the rabbit in the moon." He said in disbelief. Rini shook her head. "Tell me about the rabbit in the moon." Rini said. She didn't notice that Serena, who was walking by, stopped by the door in order to hear the story too. "Long long ago, they say, lived a monkey, a hare, and a fox. Together they formed a bond of friendship: in the day, they romped in the hills and fields, at night, to their forest they returned. And so time passed, until the god who lives in the eternal heavens heard the story. 'But is it true?' he asked, and turned himself into an old man, teetering along to see. There he found them just as he had heard, romping and playing, their hearts made one. Resting his limbs awhile, pausing to get his breath, he threw away his staff and shouted, 'Help me! Help a hungry old man!'" Diamond told. "Oh my!" Rini exclaimed. "What happened?" "The animals saw him. 'That's not hard.' they said and then, quick as a flash, from the copse behind the monkey gathered berries; from the river bank in front the fox snapped up a fish but the hare, hopping all about the place, did not a thing to help. 'Oh! That hare- his idea's always different,' they cursed. But all to no good. Then, 'break these twigs,' said the monkey, 'light a fire,' said fox. Hare did as he was told. And then, into the smoke and flames they hurled him, and served him up to the old man, all unwitting." The little girl gasped in horror. "How could they? That's awful! What did the old man do?" "He, lifting his eyes to the heavens that last for ever, sobbed and wept and then rolled prostrate on the ground. Soon, beating on his breast, he asked, 'which of the three, these three old friends, which treated me the best? They were all kind.' And yet, thinking that the hare was the finest of them all, he took him, dead and cast him high up to the palace of the moon in the heavens that last for ever. Even till today this story has been told, how the hare came to live up in the moon. And we, too, as we hear, dampen with our tears the white hemp of our sleeves." Serena, still standing by the door, heard the entire story. She saw Diamond bend and kiss Rini's forehead. "Sleep now, my darling Ruby." She heard him say. "My little rabbit from the moon." As Serena turned to walk away, her head grew light and she unknowingly began to swoon with dizziness. The blond girl fell to the carpeted floor, still hearing Diamond's words echo in her head. "Rabbit . . . from . . . the . . . moon . . ." *** "Serena? Serena!" Floated a voice through a hazy mist. The girl groaned, voicing her displeasure audibly. "Serena! Serena!" "No mommy . . . I don't wanna go to school today . . ." She grumbled, squeezing her eyes shut even tighter. "Serena!" The voice insisted shaking the girl into the conscious world. "Are you okay, Serena?" The blond's eyes snapped open an instant before she began coughing wildly. She struggled to regain composure and gasped, waiting for a calm breath. Diamond was standing over her, his silver hair falling into his worried violet eyes. "What happened? Why am I on the floor?" Serena asked. "You collapsed." He replied. "Are you sure you aren't sick too?" Serena shook her head but a cough escaped her. She pulled herself onto her feet. Her hand rested upon Diamond's shoulder to support her still shaky frame. "Serena!" Mrs. Tsukino called up from the base of the stairs. "Are you alright? I thought I heard coughing." "I'm fine." She yelled back. "Just drank some water a little too fast." Serena lied. "That's all." "Come take a look at the news, dear." Mrs. Tsukino said, ignoring her daughter's coughing fit. When Serena came into view she continued the conversation. "You're so interested in the moon, I thought you'd want to take a look at this." "The moon? What is it?" Serena asked. She walked into the living room, followed by Diamond. On television was a shot of the moon along with the words "live coverage" across the bottom of the screen. A newscaster wearing large glasses picked up a few papers and began talking. "For those of you just tuning in, approximately 5 minutes ago, a meteor unseen until now by NASA, struck the moon." He reported. Serena clutched Diamond's shoulder tight for fear of collapse. "Oh my . . ." She breathed. "Rini . . ." Diamond looked up at Serena's pale face. He was silent but by the look in his eyes was communicating with the blond. A sad darkness had turned the violet of his eyes into a deep-almost black- purple. The hopeless expression seemed to say, "This is why you collapsed . . . why Ruby is ill . . . and I fear it's not over." Serena tried to fight off oncoming goose bumps by rubbing her arms like she was cold. "This just in," the reporter said suddenly. "You aren't going to believe this. NASA reports . . . somehow . . . the meteor bounced off the moon and is now headed . . . towards earth." When Serena heard this, all strength gave out. Her knees buckled and she fell to the floor. Diamond remained frozen, staring at the screen in dumbfounded horror. Mrs. Tsukino fainted dead away in the hall. "This . . . can't be." Serena stammered. "It can't . . . it can't happen . . ." She stared at the screen. "There's no way . . . no way . . . that can happen . . ." Serena shook her head. "It's not real . . ." "What if you're right." Diamond replied. Serena glared at the boy as if he had just spoken the words that would guarantee her damnation to hell. "What if it isn't real. What if it's something else? Besides a meteor?" The girl remained unmoving on her knees. A thousand thoughts flew through her mind faster than she could comprehend. Serena coughed again. When she finished, the sound still seemed to echo through her head. Diamond's attention shifted. Serena saw him listening intently, the way Luna did whenever she caught a far away noise. "Ruby!" He exclaimed suddenly. "What is it?" Serena asked. "She's coughing!" Diamond replied. He flew up the stairs, paying no attention to poor Mrs. Tsukino. Serena stopped long enough to check if her mother was okay and then continued on her way. Suddenly Serena gasped. What if Rini was getting worse? What if the meteor's course had something to do with her sickness? "Rini!" She exclaimed, running into the room. "Rini!" The little girl raised her small pale fist up to her ghost white lips, in order to cover her mouth while she coughed. When the fit eased, her hand fell to her side and Serena saw that the little girl's brow was drenched in sweat. "Her fever is terrible!" Diamond exclaimed, pressing a hand to her forehead. He took a clean cloth, unfolded it, and dried Rini's face. The little girl opened her eyes half way and smiled faintly, seeing her only love tending to her. "Diamond . . ." She moaned which was proceeded by another cough. Her eyes closed again and she drifted off into a light dreamless sleep. The boy looked silently at Serena. He mirrored the same helpless look she held on her own face. Suddenly a little beep sounded from under the bed. "Sailor Moon!ÑBeepÑSailor Moon!" Serena lifted the covers up to reveal the Luna Kitty Ball, it's round little nose flashing. "Luna P . . ." Rini mumbled in her sleep. Serena, without knowing what she was doing, pressed the flashing nose and instantly the Kitty Sphere began to glow with a strange white light. "Sailor Pluto!" She said as the Guardian of Time came into view. "Sailor Moon, Small Lady is in grave danger." Said Pluto. "I have disturbing news for you concerning the newly discovered meteor." Serena held the sphere in her hands. "Tell us what you know, please. Rini's so sick. We don't know what to do!" The blond girl saw Diamond smile in familiarity at the Sailor Soldier. "Sailor Moon . . . Prince Diamond, the meteor that struck the moon and is now on a collision course with earth is not an ordinary meteor. Upon analysis by both myself, Sailor Mercury, and King Darien, we have discovered that just before he was destroyed, the Doom Phantom managed to manipulate space. Thus he was able to turn Nemesis into a deadly projectile which would destroy earth in this time space continuum." The Sailor Scout explained. Serena tried to focus but was still a little confused. She wasn't very good with techno-babble. "What does that mean?" The girl asked, sensing the importance of her words but not being able to comprehend them. "The meteor headed for earth is Nemesis." Pluto stated as plainly as she could. "But Nemesis is composed of evil." Diamond added. "By hitting earth, this planet would be destroyed and the evil would spread through the rest of the universe." "Not just through your universe . . . through all of time space." Sailor Pluto chimed in. "I expect you've been effected by the recent collision, Sailor Moon?" Serena nodded. "The meteor merely grazed the surface. Just like skipping stones on a lake produces harmless ripples and not a massive surge. Small Lady, on the other hand, has been severely effected." "Can you tell us why that is, Luna P?" Diamond asked. Sailor Pluto glanced over her shoulder at the ill little girl. "Small Lady is the daughter of both the moon and the earth. Any impending danger to either celestial body is sure to cause some reaction within her. Because of the fact that the meteor grazed the surface of the moon and is now headed toward the earth, Small Lady's condition continues to worsen." She sighed. "She is in essence, the embodiment of the link between the earth and the moon. That is the best way I can explain it." "So what can we do?" Serena interjected. "Neo-Queen Serenity has given me authorization to enable you to travel freely in time-space in order to stop this imminent catastrophe." The Sailor Soldier replied. "I can instruct you how to use Small Lady's time key which will transport you and your soldiers to any location and time you see fit." Pluto became silent and then turned her attention to Diamond. "Young prince, you must aid Sailor Moon in any way you can. You are in tune with Nemesis and can easily spot things the other soldiers can't." Diamond began to protest. His words became jumbled together. "Luna P . . . Ruby . . . she'll be all alone . . . I can't . . ." The Guardian of Time shook her head. "I have already made arrangements to ensure that Small Lady will be well taken care of. There is no need to worry. Your place is beside Sailor Moon." She said. Diamond bowed his head and whispered his vow of understanding and cooperation. "Sailor Moon, Diamond . . . I know you will not fail. The very existence of time depends on you. Assemble your soldiers and then I will proceed to instruct you for your journey." She said as she began to fade away. Serena gazed in awe as she held the innocent Kitty Sphere in her hands. "Come on, Diamond." Serena said. "We've got work to do." *** Serena laid the coughing Rini upon Darien's bed. "Sailor Pluto said she was sending someone to be with Rini while we were gone. My mom would never let any strangers in our house." She explained. "Do you think they'll know to come here?" Darien asked. He looked at Diamond who sat next to Rini, whispering to her as he stroked her face soothingly. Serena sighed as she watched the scouts poke at the Luna Kitty Ball in an attempt to activate it. She frowned as she said, "I hope so." Suddenly the scouts jumped and yelped as the child's toy began to beep and glow. "Sailor Moon!-Beep-Sailor Moon!" Serena picked up the ball and touched it's nose. Sailor Pluto smiled faintly as she stared at the blond. "Sailor Moon, they have arrived." She said. As if on cue, there was a knock on the door. Darien answered it. The scouts were shocked as they watched a tall silver haired man walk into the apartment, accompanied by his dark blue haired brother, a green haired woman, a fiery haired man, and four other women. "Prince Diamond! Sapphire! Emerald!" Darien exclaimed. "Rubius!" Serena added. "And the four sisters!" The scouts chorused all at once. Serena looked at the newcomers. They looked relatively the same except for a few minor differences. Their foreheads no longer displayed the dark moon symbol and there was something about their eyes . . . there was a calm . . . serene goodness in them. The silver haired boy stared at the regal man in white that stood before him. Rini fought off an oncoming fit of coughs and looked at the grown up prince and then at the twelve year old. "Sailor Pluto has sent us here," Prince Diamond began in his deep soothing voice, "to protect our mistress, the daughter of earth." Rini was confused. Before she could ask a question of the man, she began to cough violently. "I don't understand." She said after she regained her composure. Rini had been sleeping during Serena's conversation with Pluto and was unaware of what was going on. "Once Wise Man was destroyed and Nemesis ceased to exist, we returned to the place we were always meant to be . . . earth. Each of us is the guardian of a gemstone. When there is a great danger facing our mistress, we can combine our stones to create the mighty Crystal of the Earth and use it to protect her." Prince Diamond explained. "Your mistress?" Serena asked. The prince smiled. "We are sworn protectors of the daughter of the earth, child of the moon . . . Neo-Princess Serenity . . . the Small Lady of our beloved Crystal Tokyo . . . Tokyo of the Gemstones . . ." Rini could barely breathe. "You're my own guardians . . . I don't believe it . . ." Sailor Pluto smiled from the glowing orb. "Small Lady, your guardians have come from the future to protect you. Sailor Moon and the Sailor Soldiers must leave shortly. They will come back as quickly as they can." She explained. "Now you must take the time key and swiftly come to the Portal of Time so I may guide you." Pluto said. "Take the key, hold it high above your head, and say 'crystal key take me to the Portal of Time!'" Young Diamond stood and began to follow the scouts as the assembled in a circle around the glowing sphere. Rini caught the boy's hand. "Are you going too?" She asked in surprise and fear. "Luna P has asked me to help Sailor Moon." He replied, tears clouding his violet eyes. "I have to go. They need my help. I'll come back soon, Ruby." Rini sobbed as she jumped into the boy's arms, despite her coughs and the threat of a dizzy spell. "Diamond!" Young Diamond embraced the little girl, tears streaming down his cheeks. "Oh, Ruby . . . I love you." He said. The boy took the girl's face gently in his hands and brushed his lips against hers. "I love you too, Diamond." Rini said. The boy ran over to the scouts and sobbing waved good-bye to the pink haired girl as he disappeared. Rini looked up into the grown man's eyes. The same cloudy violet pair that had just vanished a second ago stared back at her. Heartbreak, comfort, hope, sadness, love . . . they were the same eyes that reflected the same soul to her. Prince Diamond took the little girl in his strong arms and comforted her while she cried. "Don't cry, Ruby. I'm here. Hush." He cooed to her in his familiar deep yet airy whisper. "Can you still hear my heart speaking to you? What does it say?" He asked. Rini coughed a bit and then silently placed her head on Diamond's chest. The silver haired man wiped a few stray tears away from the little girl's closed eyes. "It says, I love you." Rini replied. "I love you . . ." She couldn't fight off the sleepy feeling she had. In Diamond's arms she felt safe . . . and warm . . . and loved . . . it was different than she had ever felt when she was held in her father's arms . . . such a long time ago . . . "I love you . . . Diamond . . ." Rini said before she drifted off to sleep. "And I love you too . . ." Diamond said as he placed her head gently back upon the pillow and covered her with the quilt of Darien's bed. "I love you too . . . Ruby . . . my wife of the future . . ." *** Sailor Pluto gripped her ivory shaft of her garnet orb and let out a silent sigh. The Guardian of Time looked at the young Diamond. "The only way is to go to the source." She said to him. Diamond nodded. Sailor Moon arched her eyebrows. "We have to go to Nemesis?" She asked. The scouts exchanged worried glances. "The power of the Silver Crystal is strong . . . but not enough to travel through space and deliver a potent dose which would decimate Nemesis and it's Dark Crystal." "The Dark Crystal!" Diamond suddenly exclaimed. "Can we make it to Nemesis by using Rini's time key?" Tuxedo Mask asked, his white mask covering his pain filled blue eyes. Sailor Moon took his gloved hand in hers and squeezed it. She knew he was thinking about Rini. Sailor Pluto nodded. "Small Lady's Crystal Key will transport you to the surface of Nemesis. From there you must make your way to the Dark Moon Palace. Once you are on Nemesis I will be unable to communicate with you. However, I will continue to watch over you and aid you in any way I can." She said. "Thank you, Sailor Pluto." Sailor Moon replied. *** A strong wind blew over the dark sands of Nemesis as it hurled toward the earth. The scouts gasped as they caught sight of their home, no larger than a shiny blue marble in the inky black sky. Tuxedo Mask moaned in horror as he saw his kingdom, the earth, growing bigger the closer the dark moon came. "We haven't much time!" Diamond exclaimed, yelling over the howling wind. "Follow me!" He turned towards a dark purple-green structure. The young Diamond clenched his fists, his silvery hair whipping behind him. He took one step and suddenly, with a yelp of surprise, flew through the air. Diamond landed with a thud at Tuxedo Mask's feet. The masked man helped the young boy up and held his hand tightly. "That's the palace?" Tuxedo Mask yelled. Diamond nodded. "Don't worry, I won't let you go. Come on!" The scouts linked hands and fought against the relentless wind. Black dust was kicked up with each labored step they took. When they finally reached the Dark Moon Palace, they were exhausted. The structure proved to be an adequate shelter from the wind. "This place is horrible!" Mars exclaimed smoothing her windblown hair. She turned and ran a helpful hand through Mercury's blue mane that was covered in black sand. "You used to live here?" Venus asked in disbelief as she dusted off her orange skirt. Sailor Moon hugged Tuxedo Mask's waist. She shivered as new fear and old memories produced goose bumps. "So where's the Dark Crystal?" The soldier asked anxiously. Diamond was silent as he beheld the hall of the palace he had once, in a former time, called home. Memories of that time rushed back to the boy. He sprinted down the hall, hearing the sound of his boots on the marble floor joined by those of the soldiers. Diamond stopped suddenly as he found himself standing in the middle of his old throne room. "Diamond?" So many memories flashed in his mind. He heard his name spoken in different tones of the past that echoed in his ears. Diamond saw the fiery haired Rubius standing before him, his arms crossed asking for further orders to capture crystal points. There were the four sisters, speaking his name as the bowed with loyalty. He saw Emerald, covering her blushing cheeks with a feathery red fan as she addressed her prince. Diamond gulped as he saw the hooded prophet, Wise Man, calling him with hate and mystery in his voice. The boy saw his brother, Sapphire, speaking his name with brotherly love dancing in his eyes. Diamond saw Ruby whispering his name in her angelic soprano. There were so many memories . . . such love . . . such hate . . . such pain and sadness . . . The boy surveyed the room with his teary violet eyes. There was his throne where he had issued so many orders . . . the steps where he descended so his court could kiss his velvet cape in loyalty . . . the shadowed corner Wise Man would emerge from . . . the pillar Sapphire spied on the hooded prophet behind . . . the place he had first kissed Ruby . . . the spot on the marble floor where he had died. . . and the Dark Crystal . . . After all that pain . . . it was still in existence. Diamond felt warm angry tears fall down his cheeks. "Diamond?" Sailor Moon asked again. The silver haired boy snapped out of his reverie with a gasp. He looked at the pretty soldier and slowly pointed to the large purple-black crystal. Diamond didn't even bother to wipe his tears away. Sailor Moon clutched her locket and yanked the Silver Crystal from it's resting place. She held the gem high above her head and called out, "Moon-Crystal-Power!" The stone produced no light. Sailor Moon's blue eyes grew wide. She looked as if she had been stabbed in the heart. "It didn't work?" Mercury asked in shock. "What? Why didn't it work?" Jupiter exclaimed. "Sailor Moon?" Venus asked. Mars remained silent as she watched a confused Tuxedo Mask approach the blond scout. "I should've known." Sailor Moon moaned in defeat. "It's just like last time. The Dark Crystal absorbs my power. I'm not strong enough to overcome it." Venus grit her teeth. "Let's weaken the thing!" She cried as she ran towards the dark gem. "Venus-Love-Chain-Encircle!" The glowing gold link of hearts soared towards the crystal and disappeared. A large bolt of black energy shot back. She cried out as it sliced her leg. "Venus!" Sailor Moon cried as she ran to the scout who clutched her bloody calf. "Venus! Are you okay?" "I'm okay." She groaned in pain and shock. "It's not deep." The soldier pulled herself up onto her feet. "What do we do?" Mars asked. Jupiter growled from beside them. Her green eyes were dancing with angry fire. "Nothing hurts any of my friends and gets away with it. Jupiter-Thunderclap-Zap!" She cried as she chucked a fist full of electricity at the crystal. Again the power disappeared. A second later, Jupiter screamed as a bolt of black energy surrounded her. When the evil electricity had died away, Sailor Jupiter fell to her knees. "Didn't work." She moaned. Mercury shot a look of warning at Mars. The blue soldier silently thought while Jupiter collected herself and rose to join the others. "Our most powerful attack!" Mercury exclaimed suddenly. "We might be able to effect it if we combine our powers." Mars shrugged her shoulders. "It's worth a shot." All of the scouts linked hands in a circle around the Dark Crystal. Diamond and Tuxedo Mask watched helplessly. They heard the soldiers call out with determination in their voices and concentrated looks on their faces. "Mercury Power! Venus Power! Mars Power! Jupiter Power! Moon Crystal Power! Sailor Planet Power!" They all shouted. Tuxedo Mask felt the ground under his feet begin to shake. The Dark Crystal glowed with a ominous black light. There was a sudden burst of sound as energy from the evil gem knocked all of the soldiers off of their feet. "No!" Tuxedo Mask cried as he watched Sailor Moon's body arc through the air and fall limply to the floor. He rushed over and cradled the wounded scout in his arms. "Sailor Moon! Are you okay?" Diamond heard a muffled reply accompanied by Tuxedo Mask's sigh of relief. He watched all of the other soldiers struggle to their feet, gasping for breath and shaking with exhaustion. The young boy looked at the now dormant Dark Crystal. It seemed to be smirking at him . . . saying, "I destroyed your life once and I'll do it again." Sailor Moon regained her composure in enough time to see Diamond charging at the Dark Crystal. His small hands clawed at it's smooth surface as stinging tears streamed out of his hate filled eyes. The boy began to kick the gem as he screamed in frustrated helplessness. "Damn you! Why won't you die?!!? Haven't you caused enough pain?!!? Die, damn it! Go back to hell where you belong!" Diamond yelled, his body shaking with sobs. He pounded on the crystal in rhythm to the beating of his own pain filled heart. "Damn you!!! Damn you!!!" Exhausted, Diamond fell to the floor. The cold marble caressed his tearstained cheeks. His red knuckles throbbed in pain. The tip of his finger was mere inches from the Dark Crystal. He had no more energy with which to protest. Diamond stared blankly at his hands that were worthless against the gem. "Oh, Ruby . . ." He moaned as one final tear trickled out of his dim violet eyes. "I'm so sorry . . ." Silence echoed in the ears of all the soldiers. Time seemed to have slowed down. The Sailor Scouts didn't move. It was all over. There wasn't any way they could effect the Dark Crystal. Rini would die . . . they would die . . . earth would die . . . time would die . . . there would be nothing . . . nothing . . . they had failed . . . Diamond closed his eyes in defeat. From somewhere deep inside his imagination he heard the sound of footsteps in the hall. The "clip, clip" of a woman's heeled shoes on the marble floor bounced off the walls of the throne room. Diamond saw a beautiful woman dressed in royal white with long fair hair flowing behind her. Her bare shoulders and flawless face were the color of ivory. A golden crown with a silver stone in the middle graced her head. The long train on her gown and gossamer wings made it seem like she was floating through the air. She wore around her neck a long strand of diamonds and on her finger was a small red stone. The boy was shocked. He gasped as the sadness in his heart threatened to burst forth in a flood of guilty tears. "I've failed . . ." Diamond lamented. He began to cry. "My dearest prince . . . please don't cry." The angelic woman said in an airy voice. Diamond opened his eyes as he heard these words being spoken to him. He was surprised to see that the woman who he had thought was only in his mind, was standing before him. "You . . . you're . . ." *** Rubius approached Emerald. The woman who had once been the stone hearted Supreme Commander of the Negamoon forces had tears in her eyes. She burst into sobs as she clutched the fiery haired man's green vest. It had been hours since Sailor Moon had left and in that time, Rini had gotten sicker and now was no longer waking up. "Our mistress is going to die!" She exclaimed. "I know Emerald." Rubius replied as he absently stroked her curly green hair. "So will we." He added. "Sailor Moon can't fail!" Catzi protested. Bertie nodded. "We're all counting on her." "She's invincible." Prisma reminded. "But the Dark Crystal is too powerful!" Avery lamented. Sapphire, the blue haired prince, wiped away a stray tear from his cheek. He had a grim look on his face. "I don't think anything could save our mistress now. Even if Sailor Moon succeeds." Sapphire said sadly. Diamond took Rini's little hand in his own and brushed his lips gently across her palm. "My Ruby . . . I'll do whatever I can to save you . . . anything . . ." Warm tears escaped his cloudy violet eyes. "If you die now . . ." Diamond choked on his own words and became silent. "We won't let that happen!" Catzi announced with fresh hope in her voice. She smiled through her tears. "We'll protect the princess no matter what!" "We will give our own lives if it means saving her." Rubius declared. "That's right." Bertie, Prisma, and Avery agreed. "It's our sworn duty to protect her. Emerald nodded. "Your highness, we promise we will make sure you and the princess will always be together." Her green eyes were tinged with a hint of jealousy. She sighed lightly in defeat and acceptance. "You were meant to be together." "We are your protectors as well, brother." Sapphire said, his voice growing from a whisper up to an even confident tone. "You are our master as much as she is our mistress." Diamond was struck with emotion. He couldn't find the words with which to thank his court. Crystal tears flowed freely down his cheeks as he smiled with new hope. "Your majesty!-Beep-Your majesty!" The kitty sphere called. Diamond answered it in wide-eyed surprise and concern. His heart jumped and then stopped as he saw the Guardian on Time kneeling before him in the glowing ball. "My . . . wife . . . ?" Diamond breathed. It seemed like an eternity before Sailor Pluto spoke to him. The soldier neither smiled nor frowned. "Your highness, your wife is helping Sailor Moon. She is well. Please do no worry. Continue to give strength to Small Lady. Don't doubt yourselves. Your forces are powerful if you believe in them. Faith will cause your power to grow and in turn will help Neo-Princess Serenity as well as heal Small Lady. Your majesty, Prince Diamond, your court will not fail you." Sailor Pluto said. "Sailor Moon will not fail." She added. "Luna P . . ." Diamond replied. "Thank you . . ." He watched as the Guardian of Time disappeared. Sapphire came up to his brother and put his hand on his brother's shoulder. "We will give our mistress as much power as we can, but if the time comes . . . you must be prepared to use the Earth Crystal." Diamond looked as if his beloved brother had slapped him. "What?" He asked in surprise. "You are our leader, the only person who can used the crystal." Rubius explained. "If the time comes, we will pour all of our life power into the crystal." Emerald held a calm smile on her face. "Your highness, you must not be afraid to use every last ounce of our power." Diamond gasped as he looked at his court. His violet eyes rested on his brother's. The deep blue held no fear and were full of assurance. Everyone knew they would ultimately give their lives for Rini. The silvery haired prince knew too. He didn't want it to come down to that but . . . there wasn't any choice. "Avery . . . Prisma . . . Bertie . . . Catzi . . . Rubius . . . Emerald . . . my dearest brother . . . my Sapphire . . ." Diamond moaned with respect, pride, and heart wrenching grief. Sapphire smiled calmly. A single tear trickled down his cheek. "It has to be this way . . . and . . . this is the way we want it to be . . ." Diamond felt a sob burst from his lips as he clutched Sapphire's blue shirt and pulled him into his arms. Sapphire tried futily to keep himself from crying along with his brother. In the end, the entire court found themselves crying along with their prince. *** The woman nodded at the silvery haired boy who gaped at her with an open mouth. "Yes, I'm Neo-Princess Serenity." She said. "Luna P sent me here to help you just as she sent my husband to help . . ." The woman trailed off. "Ruby." Diamond replied, noticing how awkward it was for her to refer to her past self. "So you mean . . ." He said in wonder. Sailor Moon stood next to Tuxedo Mask, regarding the royal woman with awe. "Rini? Is that really you?" She asked. The soldier smiled with pride as she saw the Silver Crystal crowning her brow. "Yes." Neo-Princess Serenity replied. "It's me." She offered a helping hand to the young Diamond. There was an awkward silence between them both. Tuxedo Mask's blue eyes danced with fatherly adoration as he looked at the princess. "Then, Diamond is Rini's future husband?" He asked the question that all of the scouts were dying to pose. A slight blush crept into Neo-Princess Serenity's cheeks as she stood still holding the silver haired boy's hand. "That's right. But please, whatever you do . . . please don't tell her . . . She doesn't know and I'd like it to stay that way." The scouts nodded. Suddenly the ground beneath them began to shake. From out of one of the windows of the palace, they could see earth approaching at an alarming rate. Neo-Princess Serenity turned her attention to Sailor Moon. "The Dark Crystal is too powerful for your crystal alone. That is why Luna P sent me here. When we both battled the Doom Phantom together, both our crystals provided enough power to overwhelm the Dark Crystal and cause it's destruction. We must pool our strength." The princess paused. She grew pale and began to tremble. Neo- Princess Serenity clutched her head and gasped. The scouts watched as her body became transparent. "Oh no . . . my past self . . . she's slipping away . . ." The princess moaned. "Diamond . . . my dearest husband . . . you must use the . . . crystal . . ." *** Diamond held the glowing gem in his hand. He cradled it as it's color changed with each pulse. It glowed in tune to the Silver Crystal. It beat with the rhythm of his heart . . . Neo-Queen Serenity's heart . . . King Darien's heart . . . and his wife's heart. Each color represented a member of his court. His tears splashed upon the Earth Crystal as he hesitated. As the silver haired man watched the pale Rini sleeping, he heard his wife call to him faintly. "Diamond . . . my dearest husband . . . you must use the . . . crystal . . ." Diamond closed his eyes, He saw his court smiling at him as he began to chant in an old forgotten language. The man held the crystal in his hands, over Rini's weak little body. "Crystal of the Earth, I call upon you to heal our mistress. Use the life-force of my court, for they selflessly gave up their lives for their princess. Sacred crystal, fill our mistress with your power!" He exclaimed. The multicolored glow grew until there was an overwhelming stream of white light surging from the crystal. Diamond felt the gem's power coursing through his veins. He concentrated all his being on Rini. Unknowing to him, a single tear fell down his cheek, one for each member of his court. *** Neo-Princess Serenity suddenly stopped trembling. Her form became whole again. The scouts were astonished by what had just happened. "Thank you, Diamond." She whispered. "Sailor Moon, we haven't much time. We must act now." "Right!" She replied. Diamond watched as both women took their Silver Crystals and held them high above their heads. The Dark Crystal growled in response and Nemesis began to shake even more. Neo-Princess Serenity and Sailor Moon concentrated hard. The Sailor Scouts linked hands in an attempt to lend their energy to the crystals. There was a blinding flash of light as the two screamed, "Moon- Crystal-Power!" The Dark Crystal let out another deep growl, trying to combat the enormous amount of power. The sound of it's "voice" grew higher and higher until it transformed into a high pitched shatter. Neo-Princess Serenity and Sailor Moon collapsed as the gem broke apart and took Nemesis along with it. *** Diamond watched Rini sleep as he held the Earth Crystal in his hand. He had used all of it's power. Now the little pink haired girl would recover . . . if Sailor Moon succeeded . . . There was a bright flash of light. Diamond shielded his eyes with his arm in an attempt to make out the forms that were born from the light. The prince gasped as he saw his brother and the rest of his court. Each member carried a limp body in their arms. The four sisters laid their sailor counterparts down upon the carpet. Rubius placed Tuxedo Mask on the couch. Emerald put Sailor Moon beside him. Sapphire laid the young Diamond on the bed next to Rini. "Sapphire?" Diamond asked in confusion. "Is it true? You're . . ." The blue haired man smiled. "Yes, brother. We have been brought back to life. Our bodies are immortal." He replied. "The Silver Crystal is a marvelous gemstone." "Then this was . . ." Diamond stammered. Out of the glowing light came Neo-Princess Serenity. She slowly approached her husband. He took her hands in his and smiled at her with teary violet eyes. "This was my doing." The princess finished. "Our court has proven to be loyal and true. That fact shouldn't go unrewarded. They helped me now and in the past . . . they helped save existence . . ." "Oh, Ruby . . ." Diamond whispered lovingly. He kissed his wife deeply. When they parted, the prince and princess regarded the sleeping scouts and then looked at their court. "Our job is done." Neo-Princess Serenity said. "Let's go home." *** "Sailor Moon!-Beep-Sailor Moon!" Serena opened her eyes slowly. She groggily looked around the room for Rini's kitty ball and saw all of the scouts, now in their normal clothes, coming to. The blond picked up the ball and saw Sailor Pluto smiling back at her. "Sailor Pluto!" "Thank you, Sailor Moon. You saved us all. Small Lady is going to be just fine." The Guardian of Time reassured. Serena smiled in return. "Prince Diamond . . . and Neo-Princess Serenity . . . I didn't get a chance to thank them . . ." She said suddenly. Sailor Pluto smiled. "I'll be sure to tell them so when I next speak to them. And I'm sure they'd send their thanks to you as well, as do I." She said as she disappeared. "Serena?" Darien asked as he sat up and looked at her through his half opened eyes. "Everything's going to be fine." She replied, watching all her friends wake up and smile triumphantly at each other. To Serena's delight and relief, she saw Rini's eyes open and dance with her familiar twinkle. Diamond too watched in joyous wonderment. "Diamond!" She exclaimed with a smile and dimples playing on her rosy cheeks. Rini hugged the silver haired boy and kissed him thankfully. "Oh Ruby!" Diamond replied as he held the little girl in his arms. "I told you I'd come back!" Rini laid her head on Diamond's chest. "What happened?" She asked curiously. The sound of the boy's laughter joined with the chuckles of the rest of the scouts. "That is a very long and complicated story, Ruby. One day, I promise to tell you. One day . . ." Diamond replied with a sly smile. The End Well minna? I really hope you liked that. Proud of me, Reiy-chan? Please e-mail me with your thoughts on this fic.! Thanks to all of you who've been following the series. You'll be happy to hear the title of my next fic in this series. It's called "Recipe for Love". I hope you'll all read it. It's not dramatic but let's just say it's high in romance and cuteness. Lady Serenity was laughing her head off when she was editing it. For those of you who want to see Darien being romantic and sentimental (shock and a half!) or the continued antics of Rini and Serena in the kitchen (we all know how hilarious that is!) then you won't wanna miss this!
